Three out of four Wallfacers were very quickly found out and defeated.
The Wallfacers were four individuals assigned by the United Nations to enact the Wallfacer Project, which was a defense project enacted by the United Nations in an attempt to stop the Trisolaran invasion of Earth.
UN Wallfacer Act[]
The UN Wallfacer Act was a resolution passed by the UN Planetary Defense Council (PDC) which authorized the establishment of the Wallfacer Project. The Wallfacer Act was passed at the nineteenth meeting of the PDC, which took place in Year 3 of the Crisis Era. The Wallfacer Act was intended to be international law for the 400 years prior to the anticipated Trisolaran invasion of Earth.
Purpose[]
Each of the four Wallfacers were given a vast amount of resources to enact their own defense plan, with the important stipulation that they could not share their plans with others, due to the Trisolaran' Sophons' ability to intercept all forms of human communication. Therefore, the Wallfacers were directed to keep their plans secret within their own minds and even encouraged to intentionally try to mislead the Trisolarans by making irrelevant decisions or pretending to be enacting another plan. By nature of the plan, the Wallfacers were not required to provide detailed explanations of their actions to the PDC, which lead to frustrations among PDC members, some of whom called for the Wallfacer Act to be repealed..
Wallfacers[]
The Wallfacer Project selected four individuals to be the Wallfacers[1]:
- Frederick Tyler, former U.S. Secretary of Defense.
- Manuel Rey Diaz, former President of Venezuela.
- Bill Hines, Nobel Prize-winning Neuroscientist.
- Luo Ji, Astronomer.
Wallbreakers[]
Wallbreakers were individuals selected by the Earth-Trisolaris Organization (ETO) to analyze the Wallfacers' actions, with the assistance of the Sophons, and try to determine their plans as early as possible. The Wallbreakers true names were never revealed. However, when they were given their assignment during a meeting within the world of Three Body (game), each Wallbreaker used an avatar representing a historical figure:[1]
- The First Wallbreaker (nicknamed Von Neumann in Three Body) was assigned counter Frederick Tyler.
- The Second Wallbreaker (nicknamed Mozi in Three Body) was assigned to counter Manuel Rey Diaz.
- The Third Wallbreaker (nicknamed Aristotle in Three Body) was assigned to counter Bill Hines.
- The Fourth Wallbreaker (position not known) was assigned to counter Luo Ji.
Unlike the other three Wallfacers, the ETO did not assign a Wallbreaker to counter Luo Ji. The rationale given for this by the ETO is rather cryptic. The ETO official who assigned the Wallbreakers stated that the ETO was unsure how much of a threat Luo Ji posed to the Trisolarans and that he was considered to be "his own wallbreaker"[1]. In Year 8 of the Crisis Era, Luo Ji comes to this same conclusion by saying to himself, "Wallfacer Luo Ji, I am your Wallbreaker."[2]
Repeal[]
The Wallfacer Act was repealed in Year 205 of the Crisis Era. The only two remaining Wallfacers, Bill Hines and Luo Ji, had their Wallfacer status and privileges revoked when the act was repealed.[3] However, only shortly after, the star 187J3X1 exploded due to a photoid strike, and Luo Ji was restored into the position of Swordholder.
